An IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) can include non-ASCII characters such as accents, ñ, or non-Latin scripts. The registry and DNS still use an ASCII-compatible form.

Punycode is the ASCII encoding of an IDN label. Converted labels start with xn-- and are what systems that do not accept Unicode use.

DNS and many registries work in ASCII. The browser can display Unicode when it is able to, and uses Punycode to resolve and register the name.
