.uk or .co.uk? Choosing a British Web Address Without Creating Two Websites

You have chosen a business name, and the next question looks small: should the website end in .uk or .co.uk? Then someone suggests buying both, someone else worries about maintaining two sites, and a simple registration turns into a surprisingly long discussion. Let us make the decision easier.

The useful starting point is that these are two separate domain registrations. You can own one, both or neither. Owning both does not require two stores, two content teams or two sets of product pages. What matters is deciding which address customers should use and what the other address should do.

The difference is branding, not a shortcut to trust

Nominet manages the .uk domain family. .co.uk has a long history in British business, while a direct .uk address offers a shorter alternative. Both can fit a real business. Neither proves a company is legitimate, and neither replaces helpful product information, clear contact details or a secure checkout.

  • .co.uk can fit a brand whose customers already know the longer British address.
  • .uk can be easier to fit in a short campaign link, packaging or an email signature.
  • Registering both can help when a matching name matters to your brand and the ongoing renewal cost makes sense.

Try saying the address aloud. Imagine it on a delivery vehicle, a phone screen and a support email. Choose the version you want people to remember, rather than assuming every business needs every possible variation. Our domain selection guide helps turn that into a practical naming decision.

Old reservation rights are not a current availability promise

Direct .uk registrations were introduced in 2014 with reserved rights for qualifying holders of existing names. That reservation period ended in June 2019. The important point today is simple: having example.co.uk does not automatically give you example.uk, and an article about the old release does not tell you whether a particular name is free now.

Check both names independently through our .uk domains and .co.uk domains pages. Review the current requirements and registration terms for the exact extension. If one is taken, do not assume the holder will sell it or that the other version gives you a right to claim it; choose your next step with the brand and budget in mind.

One main address keeps the website manageable

Suppose you choose example.co.uk as the main address and also register example.uk. The usual approach is to send visits from the secondary address to the matching page on the primary site with a permanent redirect. That gives customers a clear destination without maintaining two copies of the website.

A redirect is an HTTP response, not a DNS record. Pointing both names to the same IP does not automatically create a 301 redirect. The hosting platform, web server or forwarding service must support it. For an HTTPS secondary address, the connection also needs a valid certificate before the browser can receive the redirect.

Two registered addresses can lead to one primary website; email routing needs its own configuration.

Keep useful page paths when redirecting, test a product page as well as the homepage, and avoid loops between the two names. If both sites publish the same content without a clear primary version, you create maintenance work and search-engine ambiguity. Our website creation guide and SSL options help you plan the website side of the decision.

The second domain does not automatically receive email

This catches people out. A web redirect from example.uk to example.co.uk does not make [email protected] deliver to [email protected]. Email needs the right mail service and DNS records. If customers may type either version, decide whether the second domain needs aliases, separate mailboxes or no inbound mail at all.

Our DNS tools can help inspect MX and TXT records. Read SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained before changing mail providers. When a hosted productivity platform is a better fit than running your own mail server, compare Google Workspace with the requirements of your team.

Performance depends on the whole route

A nearby hosting region can be useful for British visitors, but it does not promise a fixed lookup time or instant page load. A site also depends on its images, application code, cache policy, payment services and the visitor's connection. The database location matters especially when the application repeatedly crosses regions to retrieve data.

Keep the application and database close to each other where possible, and test from the audience you actually serve. Compare our hosting for a standard website or VPS plans for a custom stack. Confirm available locations and plan features before ordering rather than assuming every plan runs in London or includes HTTP/3.

If you are considering a CDN, our CDN guide explains what can be cached and what should remain private. Faster static images are useful, but a CDN does not automatically speed up every account or payment action.

A practical decision before you order

  • Check both names, their renewal prices and the current registration requirements.
  • Pick one primary address and write down the redirect plan for the other.
  • Confirm certificate coverage and email routing for each domain you will use.
  • Review active promotions only after checking the terms and renewal cost.

The right answer may be .uk, .co.uk or both. We can help you compare the registrations and the hosting you need, but the goal is not to build a collection of unused names. It is to give your customers a clear British-market address and a website they can comfortably use.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get .uk automatically with .co.uk?

They are separate registrations. Check the current availability of each name.

Do I need two websites if I own both?

You can choose one primary site and configure the other address to redirect to it. Hosting or a suitable forwarding service must provide the redirect.

Does a 301 redirect also forward email?

Web redirects do not route email. Configure the mail service and DNS for any secondary-domain addresses you need.

Should I buy every matching extension?

Choose variants that serve a real brand or customer need and fit your renewal budget. Owning more domains also creates more maintenance responsibilities.
