A .cn Domain for Your Business: What to Prepare Before Launching in China

Imagine that your first Chinese customer opens your website on a phone. You have translated the catalog, the product photographs look good, and your local partner is ready to share the link. Then the page stalls. That is a frustrating way to introduce a business, especially when so much work has already gone into the launch.

A local web address and a reliable website solve different parts of that problem. A .cn domain gives your brand an address associated with China. Hosting, DNS, your application and the networks between them determine whether visitors can actually use it. At SoxDomains, we want you to understand both before you commit to a launch date.

What .cn tells a visitor, and what it does not

CNNIC manages the .cn country-code domain. It is a natural option for a Chinese-language store, a local partner site or a dedicated market page. If country extensions are new to you, our guide What are ccTLDs? explains how the address system works without assuming a technical background.

Think of the extension as a sign above the door. It helps visitors recognize the market you are addressing, but it does not prove that you have a Chinese office, grant regulatory approval or guarantee a search ranking. Relevant Chinese content, useful product information, accessible contact details and a working checkout still have to do the convincing.

Prepare the identity documents before registration

Unlike a simple availability check, .cn registration includes identity verification. The registrant information must match the supporting documents. Individuals and organizations have different documentation needs, and an overseas business should confirm which business certificate and identity documents are accepted for its particular application.

  • Use the full legal name of the person or business that will hold the domain.
  • Prepare clear, complete copies rather than cropped photographs or an informal trading name.
  • Use an email account you can monitor throughout verification and later renewals.
  • Allow time for review instead of announcing an activation date before approval.

Start with our .cn domains information page, then ask us about the documents for your registrant type. We can help you work through the registration requirements; the review result and timing depend on the application and registry process. A website launch should not depend on an assumption that every document will be accepted immediately.

A .cn launch separates identity verification, hosting permissions and website testing.

A verified domain is not an ICP filing

This distinction is worth making early. If you plan to host a website in mainland China, an ICP filing may be required, and some activities involve further licensing. The hosting provider must confirm the applicable route, including whether your domain registrar and registrant details are eligible for that filing. Buying .cn alone does not complete those steps.

Hong Kong or Singapore hosting can be worth evaluating when mainland hosting is not part of the first phase. It is a hosting decision, not a way to guarantee access or bypass requirements. Test the actual site from the networks your audience uses and discuss mainland CDN or hosting plans with the provider before selecting infrastructure.

DNS, CDN and hosting: three jobs, not one

DNS tells the browser where to find your website. A recursive resolver often reuses a cached answer, so each visit does not necessarily trigger a trip to an overseas authoritative server. Distributed or Anycast DNS can help with resilience and routing, but the extension itself does not choose the closest server or set a guaranteed lookup time.

A CDN can deliver cacheable images, stylesheets and scripts closer to visitors. Your origin server still handles the work that cannot safely be cached, such as accounts and many checkout operations. Our CDN guide shows the difference, while our hosting and VPS pages help you compare the level of control your application needs.

Protect the address and the connection

DNSSEC helps a validating resolver detect altered signed DNS answers. HTTPS protects the connection between the browser and the website. They complement each other: DNSSEC is not web encryption, and a TLS certificate does not verify every DNS response. Confirm DNSSEC support for the authoritative provider and registration arrangement you will actually use.

For a plain-language explanation, read DNSSEC for humans and compare our SSL certificates. Keep account access protected and record who controls the domain, DNS and hosting. Those responsibilities matter just as much as the first successful page load.

A launch checklist you can actually use

  • Choose the registrant, domain spelling and renewal owner before ordering.
  • Confirm identity review and any mainland hosting or CDN permissions separately.
  • Use our DNS lookup to review A, AAAA, MX and TXT records.
  • Test key pages, forms, email and payment flows from your target audience networks.
  • Check current promotions and standard renewal terms instead of assuming a bundle or discount applies.

A .cn name is a useful part of a Chinese-market launch when it fits your audience and your registration situation. Put the address, documentation and website delivery plan together, and you will be making a much stronger first impression than a translated homepage on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign company apply for .cn?

Foreign applicants can register subject to the required identity verification and accepted documents. Confirm the application requirements before ordering.

Does .cn include an ICP approval?

Domain verification and ICP filing are separate processes. Mainland hosting or CDN arrangements require their own eligibility and compliance checks.

Will .cn automatically improve my rankings?

A country address can clarify your target market, but it does not guarantee a ranking. Content quality, accessibility and the rest of your website still matter.

Can I test DNS through SoxDomains?

Our Domain Tools DNS lookup checks supported public records. It does not replace mainland regulatory review or network performance testing.
