The Island That Struck Gold: How Anguilla's .ai Became the Address of Artificial Intelligence

Picture a strip of white sand in the eastern Caribbean. Anguilla is small enough that its capital, The Valley, feels more like a friendly town than a seat of government. Fishing boats, salt ponds, turquoise water. Nothing about the scene suggests Silicon Valley.

And yet, every time a new AI startup launches, there is a good chance its address ends in two letters that belong to this island: .ai.

This is the story of how a country code, assigned decades ago for purely geographic reasons, turned into one of the most valuable pieces of digital real estate on the planet. It is also a practical guide, because at SoxDomains we help our customers register, renew and protect .ai names every day, and we want you to know exactly what you are buying before you buy it.

Chapter 1: Two letters handed out by geography

Every country and many territories receive a two letter code from the ISO 3166 standard, and those codes become country code top level domains, or ccTLDs. If the idea is new to you, our guide What are ccTLDs? explains the system in plain language.

Anguilla received AI. According to the IANA root zone database, the .ai domain was registered on 16 February 1995, and the ccTLD manager on record is the Government of Anguilla, with the Telecommunications Officer of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Utilities acting as administrative contact.

In 1995, "AI" meant research labs and science fiction. Nobody was building consumer chatbots. For years, .ai quietly served the island and a handful of curious early adopters. The two letters were simply waiting for the world to catch up.

Chapter 2: The world catches up

Then the world caught up, fast.

As machine learning moved from academic papers into everyday products, founders started looking for a name that said "we build intelligent software" in the shortest possible way. Two letters did the job better than any slogan. A company called Example could live at example.ai and its visitors would understand the promise before reading a single line of the homepage.

The numbers that followed are remarkable, and they come straight from the source. In October 2024, the Government of Anguilla and Identity Digital announced a new partnership in an official press release. That release states that .ai domains generated 20 percent of the government's total revenue in 2023 alone, and that the .ai domain had grown nearly 400 percent in the past five years. The government said it planned to invest these funds back into the community, including expanding the airport, improving its technology vocational center and enhancing elder healthcare.

Think about that for a moment. A domain extension helping to fund an airport. That is what we mean when we say Anguilla struck gold.

Chapter 3: A new steward for a national treasure

Government, registry operator, registrar and customer roles in the .ai domain ecosystem

Success brings responsibility. A registry that serves hundreds of thousands of domains needs serious infrastructure, round the clock support and strong security.

On 15 October 2024, the Government of Anguilla and Identity Digital announced their partnership "to enhance the sustainability, resilience and security of .AI." Premier Ellis Webster put it this way in the announcement: "Together, we will be responsible stewards of .AI, guaranteeing its stability, security, and global prominence."

The technical move followed quickly. On 15 January 2025, Identity Digital announced that .ai was now exclusively served on its registry platform. According to that announcement, the migration happened without downtime, the extension had more than 600,000 registered domain names at that point, and the move brought enhancements such as 24/7 global support.

It is worth being precise about roles, because they matter for your peace of mind:

  • The Government of Anguilla remains the ccTLD manager on record at IANA. The island still owns the relationship with the global root.
  • Identity Digital operates the registry platform. The IANA record lists nic.ai as the registration services site, whois.nic.ai as the WHOIS server and an Identity Digital RDAP service at rdap.identitydigital.services.
  • SoxDomains is where our customers actually register and manage their names, with DNS, renewals and transfers in one account.

For you, this arrangement is good news. It combines the legitimacy of a sovereign ccTLD with the operational muscle of a large, professional registry operator.

Chapter 4: Who lives at .ai today

Walk through the .ai neighborhood and you will meet a lively crowd:

  • AI startups naming their company, their model or their agent.
  • Software companies launching an AI product line next to their main brand.
  • Automation and data platforms that want a modern, technical signal.
  • Researchers and labs sharing papers, datasets and demos.
  • Consultants and agencies who specialize in machine learning.
  • Anguillian businesses and organizations, the original residents, who use .ai as their own national domain.

Some of our customers even build their first site with AI tools. If that is your plan, our guide How to create a website with an LLM walks you from prompt to production.

Chapter 5: Why founders fall in love with .ai

It tells your story in two letters. A .ai address announces your category instantly. Investors, journalists and customers read "intelligent software" before they read your tagline.

Better names are still within reach. The perfect .com for a new AI brand is often taken or priced like a house. A clean, short name in .ai is frequently still available, or at least more reachable.

It is a sovereign, long standing ccTLD. .ai is not a trend that appeared overnight. It has been in the root since 1995 and is backed by a government that clearly values it.

It is technically modern. More on that in a moment, but DNSSEC signing and professional registry infrastructure are part of the package.

It is short. Short names are easier to say on a podcast, easier to type on a phone and easier to fit on a conference badge.

Found the one? Do not let someone else register it first. Search your .ai name at SoxDomains.

Chapter 6: The rules of the island

Every ccTLD sets its own rules. Here is what our customers need to know about .ai.

Who can register? Individuals and companies can both register .ai names, and registration is open to applicants worldwide. You do not need to live in Anguilla, and you do not need a trustee or local presence service. If you are curious about the countries where a local presence is required, our ccTLDs and trustee services guide covers them in detail.

What is off limits? Abuse. Phishing, malware, hacking tools and any activity illegal under Anguilla's laws have no place on .ai, and registrations used that way put themselves at risk. Build something useful and you will be a welcome neighbor.

How long must you register? At SoxDomains, a standard .ai registration requires a minimum term of 2 years, and you can choose any term from 2 to 10 years. This is the single biggest difference from .com, where a 1 year term is the norm, so plan your budget with the 2 year commitment in mind.

How fast is it? Registration is instant once your order is processed.

Transfers. You can move an existing .ai name to us. A transfer usually requires an authorization code and the current owner's approval. Our guide to registrar lock explains why a transfer sometimes stalls and how to unblock it, and our domain transfer page gets you started.

Chapter 7: Under the hood

For the technically minded, .ai is a solid foundation.

DNSSEC: supported. The DNS root zone published by IANA contains a DS record for .ai, which means the .ai zone is signed and chained to the root trust anchor. You can enable DNSSEC for your .ai name from your SoxDomains control panel. New to the topic? Read How DNSSEC works.

IDN: not offered. .ai names use the classic character set: letters a to z, digits 0 to 9 and hyphens. There is no IDN table for .ai in IANA's IDN practices repository, and at SoxDomains .ai is sold for standard ASCII names only. If you need a name in accented Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese script, pair your .ai with an extension that supports IDNs. Our article Why use an international domain name will help.

Name servers with IPv6. The IANA record lists six .ai name servers, each with both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. That is exactly the kind of redundancy you want behind a business critical address.

Privacy. WHOIS privacy is available for .ai at SoxDomains as an optional add on.

Chapter 8: The treasure chest: premium and short names

A buyer decision path covering term, security, renewal and premium-domain considerations
A buyer decision path covering term, security, renewal and premium-domain considerations.

Every gold rush has its nuggets. On .ai, the nuggets are very short names, dictionary words and famous tech terms.

Many of these are sold as premium names, priced by the registry rather than at the standard rate. The .ai registry's own FAQ includes a section on the auctioning of .ai domains, and one character names are among the rarest of all: most are already taken, and the few that remain are handled case by case.

Our expert advice:

  1. Check the renewal price, not just the purchase price. Premium names can carry a premium renewal too. Always confirm both before you commit.
  2. Think about the whole brand. A slightly longer name you can own comfortably for a decade often beats a trophy name that stretches your budget.
  3. Talk to us. If a premium .ai name appears in your search, our team can review the details with you before anything is submitted.

Chapter 9: Keeping your gold safe: renewals

Losing a .ai name because a card expired is a painful way to learn about renewal policies. Here is how our customers stay safe:

  • Renewal at SoxDomains is $188.62 per year. Renew before the expiration date.
  • Turn on auto renew and keep your payment method current.
  • Renew for several years at once if the name is core to your business. You lock in continuity and remove a yearly worry.
  • Know the grace rules. Grace and redemption periods vary between ccTLDs, and some registries require renewal well before expiration. Our guide What happens when a domain expires? explains each stage so you are never caught by surprise.

Chapter 10: What .ai costs at SoxDomains

These are the prices shown on our .ai page today:

WHOIS privacy$3.99 first year, then $3.99 per year

Promotions change, so the live price on our .ai registration page is always the reference.

For comparison, here are our prices for the two classic generic extensions:

ExtensionRegistrationRenewalTransfer
.com$15.89 per year$15.89 per year$15.89
.net$19.95 per year ($13.69 first year with a 3 year registration)$19.95 per year$19.95

Chapter 11: So why pay more than for a .com?

Let us be honest. A .ai renewal at $188.62 is roughly twelve times our .com renewal of $15.89. That is a real difference, and you deserve a real answer.

You are buying a category, not just an address. A .com says "a website." A .ai says "we build with artificial intelligence." That positioning does marketing work every single day, on every business card, pitch deck and app store listing.

You are buying availability. The .com you really want for an AI brand may be taken, or offered by a reseller for thousands. A great .ai name at the standard price can be the cheaper path to the name you actually love.

Do the monthly math. $188.62 per year is about $15.72 per month. For a company paying for cloud computing, APIs and salaries, that is a rounding error, and the name is the one asset every customer sees.

You are supporting a real place. The government has said .ai revenue helps fund projects like its airport and elder healthcare. Your domain renewal has a story behind it.

The smart move is often both. Many of our customers run their product on .ai and hold the matching .com as protection, or the other way round. Owning both keeps your brand safe from lookalikes.

Where .com still wins: if your audience is broad and not technical, or your business has nothing to do with AI, a .com may serve you better. We would rather you choose the right extension than the expensive one.
